Awk. (Vlog #1)

Sep 13, 2011 by

There’s really no other way to describe my first vlogging attempt. I am just so very, very awkward. It was fun though! I’m simultaneously excited and terrified for your feedback, haha.

I don’t know why my computer takes such bad quality videos other than the fact that it’s kinda old at this point. And, you know, broken. Hopefully it doesn’t affront your delicate senses too badly. ;)

Also, apparently I have an issue with actually saying the word “vlog”, because if you had to take a shot every time I say “video log” instead you would get really, really drunk.

Hopefully it’s at least moderately entertaining for you! Sorry if it’s a little on the long side… once you start you just can’t stop! Also, my apologies if I received a question from you after I had already filmed this. Next time!

Godspeed, my friends.

If you can’t watch it for any reason, here are a couple of pictures that pretty much sum it up.

I’m brunette again! Wheeee!

And in case there’s any doubt as to my complete and utter awkwardness, I give you: The Outtakes.

Thoughts on…

My voice?

My hair color?

The vlog in general?

Lay ‘em on me! Just please don’t leave me. ;)

You can’t lose me as a reader! You’re too funny!
I like the hair – work it girl!
I think the only part that made the vlog awkward was the fact that you kept saying it was awkward haha
The outtakes killed me… I was laughing really hard. I think that lowered any level of awkwardness there was lingering in cyber space :)

    • Hahaha, well I just wanted to make it REALLY clear that I’m awkward. As opposed to other things, I guess. Hahaha. Thanks girl. :)

  2. I LOVE the hair colour. I think it looks fantastic.

You sound pretty much exactly like I thought you would. …except maybe the ALmond thing.

  3. Hahahahahahaha oooomg I love it. You are hi-larious. You don’t look like you with the dark, short hair, but I like it!

Very good vlog attempt. For a good role model on vlogging, I recommend Hannah Hart from My Drunk Kitchen.

    http://hartoandco.com/my-drunk-kitchen/

    That is all.

    • Oh my gosh, I love this. Definitely will be doing some serious “research” for any potential future vlogging attempts, haha. Also, I like that you say I don’t look like me with dark hair, but my hair is naturally dark!! I guess it is a totally different shade though, haha.

  4. You’re hilarious! I loved your video log and you hair looks fab.

  5. Jenny

    so adorably cute!

  6. I think your vlog was great! Your hair is so cute that darker color!

    • Thanks Kelly! Still getting re-used to it (haha, I guess I really identified with being blond!) but I think it’s growing on me :)

  7. (1) The hair is fabulous.
    (2) I love you.
    (3) Will you marry me? Babyface doesn’t have to know.

  8. I haven’t watched it yet since I am in the office…shhh…but I think your hair looks super cute! Love the color and cut.

  9. Great job on the vlog! I would be super nervous too!

  10. You’re adorable! I’m pro brunette all the way so I’m a HUGE fan!
Oh, and I love to watch myself in the mirror when I talk. I don’t care how vain that is :)

  11. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the vlog!

  12. At work also, so can’t watch, but LOOOOOVE the hair. I always liked you as a brunette a teeeeeeensy bit better — maybe I’m biased? ;)

  13. Kate Z

Love the video. You have a great voice. You totally do say Almond funny. ;)

I really like the brown on you. It looks softer, more feminine and pretty. Blonde on those who are not naturally blonde tends to be very harsh and stark. I’d love to see you with a deep, deep brown, possibly with some deep purple highlights. Get crazy! :)

  14. I like the hair colour, but prefer it when it is all tousled like in the stills! It still looks like the fun Gretchen I picture when I think of you. As for voice, it was a little different than I pictured it, but didn’t expect the accented almond!! lol but honestly I find a lot of people say bolth, instead of both!
Great idea, I look forward to the second vlog where you are a little more relaxed! Great work!

    • Well I knew I couldn’t escape my years living in Canada without something! I do spell “theatre” instead of “theater” still, although I escaped pronouncing “drama” as “draaaaama” instead of “drahma” like my Canadian classmates! ;)

And yes, I already have a lot of ideas for a second vlog in the future — I’d say that hopefully I won’t be as awkward then, but then again it’s still me we’re talking about, haha.

  15. Lindsey

I love the darker hair! Looks much more natural than the blonde. Also, I think the voice is pretty much what I expected somehow. The almond pronunciation is different, but I guess we all have different quirks like that about us. We’re all still here!

  16. I like the hair color! Perfect change for Fall! I think your voice sounds like how I imagined it would. :)

  17. Michaela

    This was awesome!
I love it! And the outtakes are too funny.
You are a person you want to be friends with :)
I have heard your voice before, but it´s so different seeing you on video! At first, I had imagined you having a deeper voice, but it fits you.
I prefer your new hair colour to blonde, as I just think it suits you better (looks more natural, I guess).
    I love vlogs :)

  18. 1. You’re fabulous.

    2. Thank you for putting that moment in the outtakes. You know what I’m talking about. :-D

  19. Dee

    You are too cute!

I love the vlog! I think you should totally keep doing it. By the way, I say almond the same way! I didn’t realize I was wrong. Oops. Lol.

ps. I love your pups. They are too cute.
pps. I also love your new hair color! Perfect for Fall!
ppps. Ok, I think I’ve used up my quota of ps’s. :)

  20. Amy

The vlog (aka video log) was adorable! And I really like the new hair color. Great for fall! If I tried to make a vlog, it would be just as awkward!

Anddd. The out takes made me laugh outloud.

  21. SQUEE! You answered my question! Thank you so much – I am trying to figure out a way to get some traffic (you do TOO have traffic!) and fight the notion that no one wants to hear what I say! So, thanks for distilling things!

Your hair is great (I always gravitate towards darker colors come fall), your voice is actually just as I imagined, and you are totally adorable (as are the puppers!) I would definitely tune in to another vlog!

  22. Awesome! I love hearing my favorite bloggers speak!
The Al-mond thing threw me for a loop, though! ha,ha. You are too freaking cute.
We all have little words or phrases that are like that. Just the other day I used the word “niggled” in conversation with my other half, and he claimed to never have heard me say that before (despite the 5.5 years we have been together). He accused me (jokingly) of saying a racial slur (it’s NOT) and laughed his butt off at my protestations. (Niggled is just one of many holdouts I have in my vocab from my years living in London! Love that your sister says “zed”, too. I can’t pull that off – it sounds pretentious coming out of my mouth!). :)

Loved seeing the pups, and loved, loved the outtakes. (My favorite part of watching a tv show or movie on dvd is the gag-reel!).
Definitely do another one for us sometime! :)

Hey Gretchen, I got to your blog via someone else’s probably about 2 months ago and I’ve been kinda lurking ever since. Just wanted to let you know… I adore you! I enjoy what you have to say and find you to be so genuine. I love your new hair color, and it was totally cute before as well! The vlog was great, your voice sounded pretty much the way I imagined it in my head and your personality translates just the same aloud as it does written. Seeing you in real action, I totally wish I lived in the d.c. area, I’d want to meet up and play! Looking forward to reading more ! – Rikki

    • Thanks Rikki! Please feel free to come out of lurkdom any time. Sounds like it’s time for a visit to our nation’s capital…!! :D

  24. This was so good Gretchen! I was laughing out loud on more than one occasion – ESPECIALLY during the out-takes! Overall, I love the vlog and want you do to more more more!

    • Well it was definitely a fun experiment, and now I have a lot more of an idea of what to do for next time, so stay tuned! Literally!! :)

  25. Love the hair color!!!

  26. Ahoyyy :P Wow, Harry is so obedient- he patiently waits while you vlog :P aha, too cute!

  27. I am so happy we are friends, I am vain and narcissistic too. I only skype the boy so I can look at myself.

  28. You sound exactly as I had imagined! I LOVE the furr babies and the fact that Harry looked at you as if you were cuh-ray-zee! Love the new hair! Thanks for sharing your vlog with us. Is that a curtain hanging behind you?

    • It is, in fact, a curtain. A very classy Target shower curtain, to be precise, because I ordered two, didn’t know which one I liked better, and then was too lazy to return one of them. So it became my “headboard!” (My bed is pushed right up against the windows.)

  29. Reema

stop calling yourself narcissistic! That word has such a bad connotation. You are not. You care about yourself (obviously) that’s why you’re taking steps to improve your life! :)

    Those outtakes were hilarious.

  30. Finally got around to watching the vlog! Loved it! I love how you knew people would be concentrating on the whole almond thing lol. Ahh my sisters always yell at me for looking in the mirror when I talk to them lol

  31. hahaha I love your vlog!!! Its so fun to finally hear people after reading them for so long!
I have to ask, how did you edit the vlog?
